Under the maverick leadership of John Hodgson, Bretton Hall College was a unique space of exploration for aspiring young performers, actors, artists and musicians; many of whom didn’t have a clue why they were there, or what they wanted to do in life.
Situated in the middle of nowhere, the central hub was a stately home type affair that was surrounded by smaller studio spaces and ‘on campus’ living blocks. Most of the studio spaces were open twenty-four hours and if you wanted you could work through the night, which was handy if you were amphetamine fuelled. The campus was set in the middle of West Yorkshire Sculpture Park, which meant I had the privilege of being able to sit amongst the Frinks or perch on a Henry Moore whilst contemplating the meaning of it all.
